Der Tod in Venedig

On a Munich afternoon, a disciplined writer sees a stranger beside a cemetery and is seized by the need to travel. The journey will dismantle the life he has made.

Gustav von Aschenbach arrives in Venice with an artist’s public honors, an exhausted body, and a career built on restraint. At a hotel on the Lido he notices Tadzio, a beautiful Polish boy, and begins arranging his days around the chance to watch him. Meanwhile the city conceals a cholera epidemic to protect its visitors and its income. Aschenbach learns the truth but stays, following the boy through dining rooms, beaches, alleys, dreams, and classical fantasies while his discipline turns into secrecy, humiliation, and surrender.

Beauty becomes an argument he cannot survive. Venice supplies the light, the sweetness, and the rot.
