Frances Hodgson Burnett sold stories to magazines, then wrote novels for adults: Lancashire workers in That Lass o' Lowrie's, marriages, ambition, and money crossing the Atlantic. Little Lord Fauntleroy brought a different public. Sara Crewe grew into A Little Princess. She wrote for the theatre as well as the page; The Secret Garden came late in a career already crowded with books.

The children got the famous titles. There is a grown-up shelf beside them.
