Enrique Gil y Carrasco

He carried El Bierzo to Berlin in a book. He did not live to come home.

Enrique Gil y Carrasco studied law, joined Madrid's literary circles, and wrote poems, criticism, and travel sketches. Illness took him back to his home region, where he gathered material for El señor de Bembibre. Published in 1844, the historical novel put its mountains and medieval ruins at the centre of Spanish Romantic fiction. A government mission took him to Germany. He died in Berlin in 1846, aged thirty.
