Beatrix Potter

The rabbit was a picture letter. She did not stop there.
Fungi. A microscope. A paper on spores read to the Linnean Society in 1897. Then the little books, Hill Top, Herdwick sheep, and farms bought to keep the Lake District from being broken up. Potter drew, wrote, bred sheep, and dealt in land. When she died, fifteen farms and roughly four thousand acres went to the National Trust.
The nursery took the rabbit. The land took the rest of her life.
