Gregor Samsa wakes up late for work. Also he is vermin. The job still wants him. The family still needs the money. Behind the bedroom door something is scratching that used to be a son. Kafka does not explain. He does not joke. He lets a household try to go on as if a monster were only an inconvenience. You will not forget the first sentence. You will hate how normal the rest of it feels.
