Andreas Magnus leaves a protected home with no profession, no plan, and the conviction that his generation must somehow find its own song. Berlin is waiting.

The young poet enters boarding houses, cafés, cabarets, and crowded night streets where performance and survival are hard to separate. He works onstage, watches friends pursue pleasure and oblivion, and falls in love with Niels, a beautiful wanderer who will not belong to him. The pursuit carries Andreas through Berlin, Hamburg, and Paris. Around him, a postwar generation tests art, drugs, sex, faith, and freedom while sensing that none of them can quiet its deeper unrest. His desire for men is neither a puzzle to be cured nor a confession the novel retracts; it is part of the difficult truth through which he must learn to see himself.

The dance is worldly, frightened, and ecstatic. Mann asks whether moving through it can itself become an act of faith.
