Rubén Darío wrote poems, newspaper pieces, stories, and diplomatic dispatches across the Atlantic. Azul... appeared in Valparaíso in 1888; Prosas profanas and Cantos de vida y esperanza followed. French influences met a Spanish language he kept changing: its rhythms, its colours, the things it could say out loud. His journalism for La Nación ran alongside the books. The work helped make modernismo an international literary movement.
